Los Angeles County Cemeteries

NOTICE: We have several people who have volunteered to transcribe cemetery information and currently need several volunteers who would be willing to collect raw data from the cemeteries. This can either be by walking the cemetery and collecting the information or contacting the cemetery for its records to be placed online. Please check out what a wonderful volunteer was able to accomplish in Kings County, Ca. (Corcoran Cemetery). Please contact me if you are able to assist in gathering information. We have volunteers ready and waiting to do the data entry.

Los Angeles County Funeral Directors are another excellent source for information on your ancestors.
Obituaries are hard to find if you don't have the exact date of death, but the cemetery may be able to tell you which mortuary the family used. If they are still in business, you may be amazed at what they can tell you about your relative and their next of kin. I have posted many LA County Funeral Homes on the new LA County Regional Research Help Pages. Also, check out the updated Newspapers and Obituaries page for more help.

  • Find a Grave (graves of noteworthy people and others)

I received the following email about the Woodlawn and Evergreen Cemeteries but information has not been verified 7/05

Your readers need to be aware that if they are researching anyone in Woodlawn Cemetery, they will have problem. The owner of Woodlawn was involved in a major scandal. They were disinterring the graves and re-selling them and got caught. All of their records were confiscated by the State of California and it takes forever to get information.

I understand that as a result of the litigation the ensued, they are moving the newer bodies to other cemeteries and restoring markers pursuant to their known records as that was part of the final settlement. Their records were also apparently in quite a mess so they may have a problem locating family members who were settled there.

Another cemetery that may have some problems is the Evergreen Cemetery in East Los Angeles. My friend and I went there to find a family member and were told that this person wasn't buried there. What they neglected to tell us is that right next door to them was the Los Angeles County Cemetery and we could have gone there to look that same day. The Evergreen cemetery was a "City" of Los Angeles Cemetery. The cemetery on 1st street was run by the County of Los Angeles--not the same thing. They are also telling people that the only way you can see the written records is if you can show documentation that you are the nearest living relative. I understand they also got caught overselling plots and were under investigation, but do not have the full story on this.

Are you folks aware that there are also some small cemeteries connected with the Missions? The one in San Fernando has a very tiny cemetery next to their chapel that date back to very early times. Has that one been inventoried?
